My mother shared many beautiful stories of her childhood. How she enjoyed the harvest festival, open green fields, surrounded with flowers, trees, and songs from birds. The fresh air and fruit that was in abundance.
Growing up in India, I have witnessed how everyone celebrates mother earth during the spring season. They decorate their homes, plant flowers, and make colorful designs in front of their houses. It is such a joyous occasion and it's one that brings people for all Faith's together.
I always told myself that one day I too will see the colorful and magical land that my grandmother and mother always spoke of. Growing up, I noticed the trees surrounding me disappearing. The parks I used to play in turn into dustballs or into malls. The air became thicker and I was kept inside. In one generation so much has changed.
I am a mother now and can hear mother earth call out for help. She is worried for her children’s future as i am for mine. We have a choice to make a difference that will help sustain life as we know it. We are witnessing castostrophic environmental shifts that are directly related to our actions. Mother earth is sending warnings and for many people the greed of money has blinded them.
Today we are all complicit in leaving a tomorrow that is very different than what we were handed. Yesterday was so long ago it seems.
